Review For Movie The Host
This is pretty silly stuff, Twi-lite if you will, but played with maximum solemnity, no discernible humor and minimal excitement.
Tom Charity-CNN.com

[A] bizarre Saturday Night Live sketch about a girl with a bratty alien inside her.
Owen Gleiberman-Entertainment Weekly

The Host isn't very good as a romance. There's not very much passion on screen, which makes the film a poor cousin to Twilight.
Tirdad Derakhshani-Philadelphia Inquirer

The movie's structure is awkward. There's no real narrative thrust.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

The Host's infelicities-drab dialogue, ridiculous plotting, more emotional crises than there is story-are enlivened by its thematic eccentricities.
Alan Scherstuhl-Village Voice

Fear and dread of "the other" have long ruled American science fiction, fantasy, suspense thrillers and politics... How jarring then, and refreshing, to see The Host... take the invaders' point of view.
Nancy Churnin-Dallas Morning News

Those who found Twilight nauseating will find The Host has the same overlong runtime, cornball characters, and artificially pumped up romantic stakes.
Travis Hopson-Examiner.com

The Host fails as a romance, but it also struggles as an adventure film. The body-snatching angle has been done before, and the aliens... aren't menacing enough.
Forrest Hartman-Reno Gazette-Journal

Oh, the silly movies we must endure. "The Host" is perhaps one of the most brain-dead sci-fi love stories to come along in many years.
Paul Chambers-Movie Chambers

What sort of worked on the page crashes and burns on the screen, as even an actress of Ronan's caliber can't make these self-debates anything but ridiculous.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

It's all very confusing, and not very interesting.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

Beyond Meyer's trite-and-untrue formula (supernatural love triangle, exotic locale, family values and kisses as daring and transgressive), corpse-stiff dialogue, flat action sequences and a confused allegory make this movie particularly stultifying piffle
Brian Gibson-Vue Weekly (Edmonton, Canada)

You might despise the 'Twilight' series and still find something to appreciate here...at least it's original.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

Catnip for the cooing teen female set but far less engaging and rewarding for anyone else.
Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com

And you thought Twilight was bad...
Bill Gibron-Film Racket

This limply directed, solidly boring slice of sci-fi twaddle features humanoid aliens who spend much of their screen time staring blankly into the middle distance with glazed eyes. About 10 minutes into this dross, you'll know what that feels like.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Just like her Twilight series, Stephenie Meyer's 2008 novel The Host becomes another feature in which people are standing around and brooding ( ... ) Proof that it's not easy to make thoughts seem riveting when little is happening.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Niccol crafts some arresting imagery, though the slow pacing and droning new age score makes everything feel like an endless Ambien commercial.
Corey Hall-Metro Times (Detroit, MI)

Resistance is futile.
Cynthia Fuchs-PopMatters

It's a reasonably intriguing premise, but the alien invasion soon takes a back seat to the kind of tiresome teen angst where crucial plot points hinge on a kiss.
Jordan Farley-SFX Magazine

So badly scripted, performed and directed that it literally destroyed my faith in humanity.
Marc Fennell-Triple J

Three bodies plus four minds is some fertile arithmetic, but The Host can't be bothered with the intellectual or kinky ramifications of its setup.
Kimberley Jones-Austin Chronicle

There's much grave talk of souls in this sci-fi romance. Ironic, then, that it ends up being such a soulless and trifling affair.
Mike Scott-Times-Picayune

It's bewildering how sci-fi aficionado Andrew Niccol ("Gattaca," "The Truman Show") could mastermind such a parasitic mess.
Susan Granger-SSG Syndicate

Yeah...um...no...don't ever do this again please.
Bob Grimm-Tucson Weekly

Come back Bella and Edward - all is forgiven.
James Croot-Flicks.co.nz

Movie Overview For The Host

Review For Movie Chronicle
As pulp sci-fi this Fox release is pretty good, but it's also commendable for its sensitive depiction of adolescent behavior.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

"Chronicle" is a mildly experimental commercial film, and, for the most part, it's loose-limbed fun.
David Denby-New Yorker

Chronicle is the kind of movie that makes one excited about the future prospects of the man at the helm.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

Without the found-footage distraction, Chronicle is an entertaining and creative take on the concept of teenage superpowers.
Eric D. Snider-Film.com

Although it dog-legs into silly mayhem in the homestretch, for a good portion of its quick 83-minute running time Chronicle is a quite clever boys-gone-wild-on-telekinetic-powers fantasy.
Todd McCarthy-Hollywood Reporter

Chronicle puts a fresh, invigorating spin on the superhero origin story, a tale Hollywood spins again and again (and again).
Adam Graham-Detroit News

Superpowers mightn't be for everybody - especially angry, disaffected teenagers.
Tom Glasson-Concrete Playground

The visual effects in Chronicle are astounding, but it's the well-drawn characters and convincing performances that keep it so wildly entertaining.
Steve Newton-Georgia Straight

Chronicle is a sometimes fun, slightly dark film about a boy and his camera.
Shannon M. Houston-Paste Magazine

Villains rarely get the lead-character treatment in Hollywood, and that alone makes Chronicle worthy viewing if one is craving a unique found-footage film.
Jeremy Wheeler-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Such cleverness doesn't save the film from predictability and contrivance; it's a triumph of mindlessness over matter.
Peter Keough-Boston Phoenix

Chronicle isn't just a unique found-footage movie or superior superhero film, it's a truly enjoyable blend of the best each genre has to offer.
Ben Kendrick-ScreenRant

If other filmmakers involved in this genre could put as much time and effort into their story and characters as screenwriter Max Landis and director Josh Trank did here, there'd be a lot more of them worth watching
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

If how you finish is the pinnacle of performance, Chronicle drills the game winning kick through the uprights just as triple-zeros strike the clock.
Erick Weber-NECN

Captures the wonder of the superhero power fantasy in a way few films ever have.
William Bibbiani-CraveOnline

The overwhelming number of superhero films of late and the seemingly limitless ability of CGI have taken some of the wonder out of displays of dazzling feats beyond ordinary human potential. Chronicle restores that thrill.
Mark Pfeiffer-Reel Times: Reflections on Cinema

Understands postpubescent psychology and even lightly traffics in philosophy...Here are newly born man and superman, both unprepared for the consequences of their sudden inheritance of the earth. [Blu-ray]
Peter Canavese-Groucho Reviews

There's not much in the way of character development, and the acting, though competent, isn't a selling point. The special effects are decent, but not incredible. If you buy "Chronicle," it's because of the concept itself.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

A bold mix of "The Craft" and "Akira"...
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

The finale, indeed, makes a lot of what we've seen in much more expensive superhero films look stupid.
Rob Gonsalves-eFilmCritic.com

What is Chronicle? It's the answer to the question that you asked your friends when you're a kid - what would it be like if super powers were real?
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

An intriguing, character-driven genre story well told.
Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com

Clearly made to kick off a new found-footage franchise, Chronicle is a very clever story about teens who develop unusual powers, mixing everyday reality with some excellent out of this world sci-fi fantasy.
Simon Weaving-Screenwize

A semi-serious sci-fi romp, lighter and more fun than many of the comic-book movies that it steals from, a superhero movie in which nobody ever crusades, or wears a cape.
Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service

Utterly gripping...
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Review For Movie Parental Guidance
This grating family comedy resembles a sitcom in its flat lighting, patronizing music cues, and frames supplying little visual information apart from the actors' mugging faces.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

One of those intergenerational embarrassment comedies in the Meet the Fockers line, where children can enjoy seeing grown-ups looking ridiculous.
Liam Lacey-Globe and Mail

An extended "in my day" joke intended to convey the superiority of old people over a lot of supposedly contemporary behavior that doesn't actually exist in real life.
Chris Packham-Village Voice

After a while it seems to run out of jokes, maybe to make room for all the crying and hug-it-out family redemption in the last half hour.
Owen Gleiberman-Entertainment Weekly

I can't deny I did feel fonder of my own family afterward, mostly because I know none of them would ever make me sit through Parental Guidance.
Mary F. Pols-TIME Magazine

It's hard to know who exactly "Parental Guidance" was made for.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

A joyless and crude comedy that celebrates bathroom humor.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

The film's gags are predictable and fairly lame, but the stars' diehard fans will enjoy Crystal's snarky one-liners and, yes, Midler's singing.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

Borscht Belt humor combines with serious schmaltz to produce this gummy formulaic family comedy.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

People with brains they can't turn on and off for 90 minute stretches of holiday family togetherness will be driven to take some kind of painkiller before the final credits roll. Everyone else will be fine
Dave White-IFilm

If 'Parental Guidance' is the drivel that's passing for family fare this winter, then it's best to just keep your family warm and entertained at home.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

... a shameless mix of obnoxious slapstick and relentless bodily-function humor that results in shots to the crotch for Crystal and blows to the brain for moviegoers.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

I don't know if it's reassuring or scary that in such an American film the kids seems to be UK-style victims of both health and safety rules and political correctness at the same time.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Poor Crystal. There remains a scintilla of dignity in his sad clown. He may beatbox while wearing wraparound sunglasses, but, thankfully for you and yours, he does not dance the robot.
Leah Churner-Austin Chronicle

The underlying issues make for a surprisingly relevant film.
Graham Young-Birmingham Post

A yappy pile-up of grandparents-know-best shtick, gross-out bathroom humor and sentimental claptrap.
Neil Pond-American Profile

Crystal, Midler and Tomei make a perfect combination for this funny but heartwarming family film
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

A brutal comedy of bad manners ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Just as ghastly as it sounds.
Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express

The family friendliest movie comedy this holiday season is also the sappiest and schmaltziest. And thanks to Billy Crystal, the shtickiest.
Roger Moore-McClatchy-Tribune News Service

A film with little else to commend it from the obvious.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

Frankly it all feels a bit obvious, perfunctory and dated.
Stella Papamichael-Radio Times

Midler does her best as a put-upon grandma but, ultimately, Parental Guidance feels dated.

Ron Shelton (Bull Durham) wrote and directed the basketball-oriented seriocomedy White Men Can't Jump. Woody Harrelson plays Billy Hoyle, a white con artist who hustles basketball games with black players, lulling his victims into the misguided notion that white men can't match up with black hoopsters. One of his victims, African-American Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes), becomes Hoyle's "agent," arranging his various inner city scams. Deane doesn't feel as though he's selling out his own people; he goes along with Hoyle to provide a better life for his wife, Rhonda (Tyra Ferrell), and son. The film breezes through several zany sequences, including one liberal-baiting satirical moment set at a black/white "solidarity" basketball game arranged by an ambitious politician. Crooked gamblers intrude upon the last scenes of the film, but Hoyle is rescued by his girlfriend, Gloria (Rosie Perez), a Jeopardy freak who realizes a lifelong dream by winning big on the Alex Trebek-hosted game show. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Review For Movie White Men Can't Jump
This picture is packed with fun, but it doesn't really go anywhere.
Jonathan Rosenbaum-Chicago Reader

A double-whammy slam-dunker of a movie.
Stephen Garrett-Time Out

This film unfolds in an uncommonly sweet, harmonious climate, one in which rude remarks are the sine qua non of friendship. And that benign atmosphere becomes a large part of its charm.
Janet Maslin-New York Times

What Shelton fails to provide is a coherent structure; the film is wearyingly repetitive.
Peter Travers-Rolling Stone

For the most part, it's a provocative one-on-one between racial opposites Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson.
Desson Thomson-Washington Post

Here is a comedy of great high spirits, with an undercurrent of sadness and sweetness that makes it a lot better than the plot itself could possibly suggest.
Roger Ebert-Chicago Sun-Times

Hustlin' hoops tale with too much skin for kids.
Heather Boerner-Common Sense Media

Even basketball-phobes will enjoy it.
-Film4

Succeeds only intermittently.
-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Amusing and fun.
Luke Y. Thompson-New Times

Episodic by enjoyable. Rosie Perez steals this one.
Dan Lybarger-Nitrate Online

A pretty terrific and very different kind of sports comedy.
Rob Thomas-Capital Times (Madison, WI)

Rosie Perez steals the movie from the two male leads
Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat-Spirituality and Practice

Basketball really isn't the central theme. It is really about relationships, loyalty and honesty, qualities in short supply among hustlers.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

A hilarious white-black buddy comedy that manages to not feel completely contrived. Snipes is excellent.
Brian Mckay-eFilmCritic.com

Apparently white men can't write scripts very well, either.
Alex Sandell-Juicy Cerebellum

Mostly, it rocks.
Bob McCabe-Empire Magazine

Occasionally very funny dialogue is not enough to rescue a story about the lives of two basketball hustlers who basically live for the game.
Mark R. Leeper-rec.arts.movies.reviews

Shelton's film is so raggedy that it never finds its focus, despite another terrific performance from Snipes, one of the finest actors in movies today.
-Deseret News, Salt Lake City

Shelton's enthusiasm is remarkably refreshing, but it's not enough to mean well, and we don't know much more about these people or their world at the end than we learn at the beginning.
Louis Black-Austin Chronicle
